HOW TO REPAIR AN OIL LAMP.
1. Know the parts of the oil lamp.
Understanding the simplicity of oil lamp design and the function enhances the appreciation of owning your lamp. Simple parts, easy operation and low maintenance have made the oil lamp timeless. The basic parts of an oil lamp are the fuel bowl, collar, burner, wick and chimney or globe.
2. Find the spare oil lamp parts you need.
Browse our comprehensive Spare Parts Catalogue for parts you need for your type and model of oil lamp. Here you will find lamp oil, wicks and replacement chimneys. If you need lamp hardware parts for a specialized lamp (such as an Aladdin) use our search facility. Simply type your keyword (such as aladdin) into the search field and click search.
3. Clean the chimney.
Be sure to clean the chimney on a regular basis. Especially after you use the lamp, clean with warm, soapy water or window cleaner and a soft cloth.
4. Add oil to the lamp. To add more oil, remove the chimney, unscrew the burner, leaving the wick undisturbed, add the oil to within 1/2 to 1 inch of the top and re-assemble. Be sure there is always at least a 1 inch coverage of oil over the bottom of the wick in the fuel bowl.
5. Replace the wick.
Unscrew the burner unit and screw out the old wick from the backside. Discard the old wick, being careful not to drip the oil onto surfaces. Thread the new wick into the burner unit from the bottom, and screw until 1/2 inch of the wick tip is visible.
6. Trim the wick.
You can leave the end of the wick straight across for a wide flame, or trim it into a rounded semi-circle, a pointed triangle, or a double pointed tip (like the top of the letter "M"). Each style will produce its own flame shape. Once trimmed, insert the end of the wick in the oil and screw the burner unit back onto the lamp. Allow the new wick to soak in the oil for 15 to 30 minutes before using the lamp.
7. Explore our Spares Catalogue for replacements.
Parts can break or wear out with use. The John Moncrieff website offers a wide range of chimneys, bowls and globes in an assortment of glass types, as well as bronze and other metals. Several styles of burners, collars, screws and other specific parts are also available. Find a match for your need by comparing measurements, styles and brands.

Choosing a Light Shade
The critical aspect when choosing a Light Shade is what we call the fitter. The fitter is the hole at the top of the shade that fits into your light fitting. There are three basic types:
Standard Bayonet: 28-30mm straight hole in the top of the light shade. To fit the shade is quite a simple process. Unscrew the bottom part of bayonet, slip the light shade over the bayonet and screw the bottom part back in place to secure the shade. It is the same principal for up lighters.
Neck Fitting: 57mm, 80mm, 100mm or larger. Light Shades with a neck fitting are secured by a fitting with 3 screws. The fitting sits over the opening and the 3 screws tighten just under the lip of the shade to hold it securely. The dimensions of the neck may vary but generally they one of the sizes listed or slightly smaller. If you like one of our Neck Fitting shades but your light has only a bayonet, do not worry! John Moncrieff Ltd stocks a range of Galleries that fit directly onto your bayonet and that will allow you use any neck fitting shades.
Spring Fitting: Hole sizes vary. These types of light shades have a fitter hole of greater than 30mm. Typical they maybe for a chandelier shade 40-60mm or for a larger ceiling shade 100mm +. These light shades are held in place by a gallery and 2 springs that slips inside the fitter opening and spring out to hold the shade in place. John Moncrieff Ltd stock an extensive range of galleries and suitable springs in varying lengths .
Light Shades News
The Light Shades we make seems to becoming the choice for those seeking quality products. Look around any popular bar, museums and church and you will see our shades and fittings. Even Royalty is not immune some of our glass shades hang there too.
So be sure when you buy from Moncrieff you will be buying the best.
The Importance of an Oil Lamp Chimney
The uninitiated may think that any Oil Lamp Chimney which fits a burner would do, but this is not so; the most critical factor of an Oil Lamp is the draft supply, which is calculated very accurately. The chimney, by the size and location of the bulge and overall height, is the ruling factor and substitutes will not give the same lighting efficiency.
